1. What is Official Payments?
Official Payments Corporation is the leading provider of reliable, secure electronic payment options to government and other entities. Official Payments is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tier Technologies, Inc., which is a publicly traded company. Official Payments' proven, trusted Internet and telephone systems enable citizens to pay everything from tax bills to parking citations, using their credit or debit cards.

2. How is Official Payments affiliated with the government?
Official Payments is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tier Technologies, Inc., a publicly traded company. Official Payments has contracts with federal, state and local government entities. These contracts enable Official Payments to collect and process citizens' tax and other payments on behalf of these entities. Because we work directly with the government agency, your payment is made securely and swiftly, with no delay in processing.

3. What do you mean by federal, state, and local payments?
Federal payments made to the U.S. Treasury for personal and business income tax payments. State payments include both personal income tax payments as well as a wide range of business taxes and fees. Local payments include everything from property and real estate taxes to utility bills to parking and traffic citations.

Federal payments are now processed through our dedicated web site - www.officialpayments.com/fed. The federal payment site is designed in green color scheme while the main Official Payments website uses blue color scheme.

All other state and local payments are processed at our main site - www.officialpayments.com.

4. How does the payment process work?
Federal Payments - Once you submit your payment information to us, your credit or debit card issuer authorizes it and we send it to the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS will validate your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number and the other tax information you have provided before accepting your payment. Separately, the convenience fee is sent to the Official Payments account. Federal payments are now processed through our dedicated web site www.officialpayments.com/fed. State & Local Payments - Once you submit your payment information to us, your credit or debit card issuer authorizes it and we send it to the government or other entity. Separately, the convenience fee (minus the processing fees) is sent to the Official Payments account. See our Payment Process Demo at www.officialpayments.com.

5. What payment options can I use to pay my taxes?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover Network, and American Express credit and debit cards. We also accept Bill Me Later® (What is Bill Me Later®?), Green Dot Money Pak® and Revolution Card.
To make a debit card payment you can use a MasterCard or Visa Debit Card or any debit card with Nyce, Pulse or Star logos.
Eligible payment options can vary depending on the biller. The accepted payment options will be displayed during the payment process after you select the payment entity.

6. If I paid my taxes through Official Payments, do I still have to file the associated paper form?
Each entity has different requirements on the filing of the associated paper forms, and you should check with the government agency to determine their requirements for filing the associated forms.

7. Why should I use Official Payments to make a payment to a government or other entity using a credit or debit card?
Charging your payments on your credit or debit card is fast, convenient, and easy. It helps you defer the payment, giving you flexibility in your cash-flow management. And, if you participate in rewards programs offered by your card issuer, you actually earn rewards for your payments.

8. Do I need to download any software to use this service?
No. Both our Web site and automated Pay by Phone service 1-800-2PAY-TAXsm (1-800-272-9829) are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

9. What browsers does Official Payments support?
You need to use a browser that supports SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) 128-bit encryption. We recommend that you use the latest versions of browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari. If your browser does not support this encryption and you prefer to pay via telephone, call 1-800-2PAY-TAXsm (1-800-272-9829) .

10. Do you provide access for disabled adults?
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Official Payments provides additional customer service for disabled adults or others who require special assistance making a payment. Telecommunication Relay Service (TRS) is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To reach TRS in any state, simply dial 711. TRS operators can call 1-877-297-7457 and select option 5 for special assistance with Official Payments Services.

11. Who do I contact if I have any questions or need help?
To help Official Payments Customer Service Representatives assist you with your questions, please have the following information handy when you e-mail or call us:

  • • Name of the government entity you want to pay (e.g. Internal Revenue Service, New York State, or Bexar County, TX).
  • • Amount you want to pay.
  • • Contact e-mail address or telephone number where you can be reached.
  • • Confirmation number and the last four digits of your credit or debit card number, if you have already made a payment.

13. I am an active duty military person stationed at a military or naval base, how do I enter my address information on your system?
Provide your APO or FPO in lieu of a town or city designation and your AA, AE or AP in lieu of a state, county or province designation.
